Abstract

Prodn. of feed for ruminants comprises chopping up straw (or analogous material contg. lignocellulose) to pieces of max. length 0.1-5 cm opt. grinding, then mixing with 1-10% NaOH and 0.5-5% exidation catalyst at a moisture level of 10-20%. The mixt. is then vigorously mechanically milled at 60-100 degrees C, and the prod. granulated. Esp. mixing is at 40-50 degrees C for 10-40 min. and pref. oxidation catalysts are salts of Cu, Fe, Mn, Co, V, Cr or Ni. The starting material made be treated with 0.1-2% of an oxidant, e.g. a nitrate or permanganate, and 0.1-5% urea. Digestibility and nutritional value are superior to those of other straw-based feeds. When added to feed concentrates at 35% a material derived from wheat straw provides 90% of the energy of barley.
