Abstract

A device for guiding the mandrel of a machine for piercing hot ingots (b), the mandrel extending along the piercing axis (A) on the outlet side of the piercing machine, the device being characterised in that it comprises: at least two similar horizontal guides (7, 8) rigidly secured at the sides of the machine in symmetrical positions relative to the axis (A) and the outlet side of the machine, each guide (7, 8) comprising a straight portion (7a, 107a) starting from the outlet side of the machine and parallel to the axis (A), and a curved portion (7b, 107b) diverging from the axis (A), a first and a second group of similar rigid members (11, 111) slidable in corresponding guides (7, 8) and directed towards the axis (A), the members (11, 111) in each group being interconnected by pivots (15, 16-115, 116), each member (11, 111) having a free end (11c, 111c) facing the axis (A), and having a substantially semicylindrical saddle- like cross-section having a diameter equal to the outer diameter of the mandrel (3) and adapted to engage therewith, and means (19, 119) for positioning each group of rigid members (11, 111) along the rectilinear portion (7a, 107a) of the corresponding guide (7, 8).
