Abstract

A process for preparing salicylamides of the formula ** formula ** where R1 and R3 are independently hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl groups; R2 is a hydrogen atom or a group of lower alkyl, lower alkoxy lower alkyl or hydroxy lower alkyl; Alk is a cyclic or acyclic alkylene bridge containing 2-10 carbon atoms, with the proviso that there are 2-6 carbon atoms separating the nitrogen atoms it bridges; Z is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, lower alkanoyl, lower alkyl sulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, lower alkoxy lower alkyl, 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl or benzyl; and Y1 and Y2 are independently hydrogen or halogen atoms or hydroxy, trifluoromethyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, nitro, its substituted amino, mono lower alkyl amino, di-lower alkyl amino, lower alkanoyl amino, lower alkyl sulfonylamino, arylsulfonylamino, N -lower alkyl N-lower alkanoyl amino or N-lower alkyl-N-lower alkyl sulfonylamino; and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy and lower alkanoylamine groups containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, characterized in that a compound of the formula ** formula ** where X is an oxygen atom or (H, OH), Alq, R1 and R3 are as defined above, Pg is a hydrogen atom or a reductively removable protecting group, R2a and Za are respectively R2 and Z defined above or a reductively removable protecting group, and Y1a and Y2a are Y1 and Y2 defined above, or a hydroxy or amino group (including unsubstituted and mono-substituted amino groups, but excluding di-substituted amino groups, defined above for Y1 or Y2) bearing a reductively removable protecting group, provided that when R2a, Pg, Za, Y1a and Y2a are respectively the groups R2, H, Z, Y1 and Y2, then X is an oxygen atom it is reduced in an appropriate solvent.
