Abstract

A reservoir for the storage of variable volumes of two liquids in pressure transmitting relation to one another comprises, in one construction, an axially symmetrical container 1 divided into two chambers by a flexible membrane 2 connected to the centre of the container wall and arranged so that the membrane lies snugly against the container wall in the extreme positions and floats freely in all mid positions. Alternatively, the membrane may take the form of a bladder secured at its apex to the container. In another construction for use with liquids which can be mixed slightly at the interface, the container is filled with a cellular structure, tubes or laminations which permit axial but not transverse movement of the liquids within the container upon variation in the relative volumes of the two liquids. Reference is made to the use of the reservoirs for recovering energy from high pressure concentrates in reverse osmosis and wet oxidation water treatment plants, and to store alternating streams in ion exchange installations.
