Abstract
A process for desulfurizing petroleum residues, by treatment with an alkali metal monosulfide hydrate reactant, at a process temperature of between about 120 and 325º c, to also form the corresponding alkali metal polysulfides, characterized by the combination of : a) separate, at said process temperature, a mixture of alkali metal monosulfide hydrate, unreacted and alkali metal polysulfides, from the desulfurized petroleum residues, b) hydrolyze said polysulfides in a closed system, adding to said mixing, at said temperature, at least 1 mole of water for each mole of hydrate and polysulfide, thereby forming water vapor and hydrogen sulfide, c) separating said water vapor and said sulfide and hydrogen, c) separating said water vapor and said hydrogen sulfide, from said system, thereby reducing the water content therein, to that of the hydrate of alkaline demetal monosulfide, and separating said hydrate of the higher sulfur content polysulfide, d) separating said hydrate from said polysulfide, for recycling to said process.
