CONSISTE EN CALENTAR UN FLUIDO QUE CIRCULA EN UN CONDUCTO POR MEDIO DE UNA RESISTENCIA, MIDIENDOSE LA ELEVACION DE TEMPERATURA ENTRE DOS PUNTOS FIJOS, COLOCANDOSE EN DICHOS DOS PUNTOS DOS CAPTADORES. EL CAPTADOR DE ENTRADA SE COLOCA MAS ALEJADO DE LA RESISTENCIA DE CALENTAMIENTO QUE EL CAPTADOR DE SALIDA. EN UN PRIMER MODO DE FUNCIONAMIENTO LA POTENCIA P DISIPADA EN LA RESISTENCIA SE MANTIENE CONSTANTE Y EL CAUDAL D SE MIDE SEGUN LA ECUACION (1), DONDE TS Y TE SON LAS TEMEPERATURAS DETECTADAS POR LOS CAPTADORES DE ENTRADA Y DE SALIDA Y A ES EL COEFICIENTE QUE DEPENDE DEL FLUIDO. EN UN SEGUNDO MODO DE FUNCIONAMIENTO LA DIFERENCIA DE TEMPERATURA SE MANTIENE CONSTANTE, QUEDANDO DEFINIDO EL CAUDAL EN LA ECUACION (II), DONDE TO VIENE DADA POR LA ECUACION (III).
