Abstract

Evapn. of the seawater takes place as it percolates through a layer of sand covering a waterproof sheet on an inclined plane facing the sun. Just above the plane and parallel to it is a hollow panel made of material which is transparent to sunlight but not to infra-red radiation. Fresh seawater is passed upwards through the panel to a header tank above the top end of the inclined plane. Water from the tank is sprayed on the layer of sand where it is evaporated by solar heat. The vapour is condensed on the underside of the panel which is continuously cooled by incoming seawater which, in turn, is preheated on its way to the header tank. Condensate is drained from the panel into a collector. The waterproof sheet is pref. made of high density polythene and the sand layer about 30 cm. thick. The panel material may be methacrylate or the panel may be an inflatable structure. Pref. seawater sprayed on to the sand is precoloured, e.g. with an organic dye or with a dye based on manganese oxide. The installation is for the prodn. of demineralised water from seawater. The temp. differential between the evaporative sand bed and the condensing panel is maintained at a high level by incoming seawater. This offers a high output for the size of installation, e.g. 25 to 30 litres of demineralised water per square metre per 8 hour day.
