Abstract

EP--64355 A Sulphur dioxide is reduced to elemental S by (a) contacting a mixt. of steam and SO2 in a first reactor with coal under conditions to form a prod. with a molar ratio of H2S to SO2 of above 2:1; (b) withdrawing sulphur, H2S and SO2 from the reactor; (c) recovering the S; (d) adding SO2 to the H2S/SO2 mixt. to produce a 2:1 molar mixt.; and (e) feeding the mixt. to a second reactor with a catalyst to form elemental S. - In an alternative method, the H2S:SO2 molar ratio in step (a) is about 2:1 and step (d) is omitted. - The process combines the best features of the Resox and Claus processes by using inexpensive, high sulphur coal and yet achieving sulphur yields at least as good as those of the conventional Claus process.
