Abstract

Steel making slag is granulated by directing jets of compressed gas at greater than 10 bars pressure at an angle of at least 40 deg. towards a 10-50 mm. thick streams of the liquid slag. - Pref. the gas jets (7, 8) are positioned to form a continuous curtain of high flow rate gas, which impacts the liquid slag stream (2), and make an angle of 70-110 deg. which the slag flow direction. The high pressure gas may be compressed air at 16-32 bars pressure and at least 20000 Nl/min. flow rate, or may be steam or nitrogen. The method avoids the problems of water granulation or mechanical granulation using solid surfaces and produces round granules of slag. EPAB- EP-131668 B Process for obtaining granules from steelwork slag, in which a liquid stream of slag is dispersed to form droplets, these droplets are then solidified by cooling using cold gas jets, forming, with the said flow, an angle of at least 40 deg. and pref. between 70 and 110 deg.C, characterised in that the dispersion of the liquid stream is carried out using compressed gas jets at a pressure greater than 10 bars (10 power 6 Pa) directed towards a flow of liquid slag of a thickness of between 10 to 50 millimetres.
