Abstract
In a process for producing alkali-soluble cellulose, the starting material cellulose is treated with substances which alter the structure of the cellulose. Cellulose pulp is treated with a cellulase enzyme mixture which weakens hydrogen bonds between the molecules to the extent that, at least at a content of 3% by weight, it dissolves, with a certain degree of decomposition, in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide of 5-10% by weight. The cellulose is washed and possibly dried after the enzyme treatment. The alkali- soluble cellulose is used to produce cellulose fibres or films or other cellulose products by mixing it into an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide and by conducting the aqueous solution into an acid bath.
