Abstract
Chlorinated polyvinyl chlorides having a chlorine content of 60-70% are prepared by (1) carrying out a suspension or mass polymerisation of vinyl chloride using an acyl peroxide catalyst to give a polymer having a K value of 50 - 80 in dichloroethane, a relative viscosity of 1.3 - 1.8, a specific weight of 0.40 - 0.80 kg/dm3, and a particle size of 0.50-0.5 mm.,and (2) chlorinating an aqueous suspension of the polymer at 35 deg. - 80 deg.C. using a chlorine pressure of 2 -10 kg/cm2 and a water : polymer phase ratio between 1.5:1 and 5:1. The chlorination step is simple, rapid and cheap, and large amounts of chlorine are incorporated quickly. The polymers have an excellent stability under load at high temperatures and are also easy to blend with plasticisers or other polymers. The polymers are remarkably transparent.
