Abstract

Nitriles Y-CN (where Y = alkylphenyl or alkenyl of formula: where R = H or CH3 (at least one = CH3)), are made by vapour phase ammoxidation of cpds. Y-CH2-Cl by reaction with oxygen and ammonia in the pres. of a catalyst comprising a deriv of an element of gps. IB, IIIA, IIIB, IVA, VA VB, VIB or Fe. Suitable catalysts are the oxides of Cu, Fe, Sn, Pb, Ti, Zr, V, Tl, B, P, Si and Ge are stannates and zirconates or Pb and Tl. They may be mounted on an inert carrier. Reaction is carried out by passing the chloromethyl cpd. (e.g. methallyl chloride, o-, m-, or p-chloromethyl toluene etc) with air and ammonia and opt a diluent e.g. steam over a bed of the catalyst at 300-600 (pref. 350-450 degrees C) and cooling the products rapidly to avoid side reactions. Products include methacrylonitrile, cyanotoluene etc.
