Abstract
Excitation of a fluid medium contag an entrained condensed phase, by means of an arc discharge between an anode and a conical top cathode, which forms a contraction of the region carrying the current in the transfer zone near the cathode, the extension of the points of defelction of this contraction enclosing an angle. A fluid medium is projected forceably along the conical top of the cathode and through the contraction of the current-carrying region with a mass flow density at constant flow rate which is sufficient at least to bring about a temp. rise in the arc column at constant current and with a total convectional flow rate of the fluid medium at constant flow density, sufficient to reduce the angle below 40 degrees at constant current, and that a finely dispersed non-gaseous medium in a state causing an increase of the angle is added to the fluid medium which is forceably projected along the conical top with a total convectional, velocity at constant total mass flow density, which lies below that which is sufficient to reduce the increased angle below 40 degrees at constant current.
