Abstract

Title process is effected at room temp. by adjusting a soln of beta-aescine, or an ext. of horse chestnut esp. a 5% soln of beta-aescine to a pH 9.5-11.2 pref. 10.5 and maintaining the pH in this range by further addition of alkali until isomerisation is complete. The process is rapid and little saponification results.
