Abstract

Sounding board or body for stringed instruments is dimensionally stable and insensitive to moisture. It is of wood whose cell walls are sealed with small amounts of a pref. styrene/acrylonitrile polymer which does not fill the pores of the wood. Pref. the wood is autoclaved with liquid unsatd monomers which are driven into the pores to swell the cell walls. The pressure is then reduced to remove the liquid from the pores and the monomer is polymerised by gamma, x-, electron or mixed reactor radiation.
