Abstract

A central converter zone contg. fissionable U-235 and breeder U-238 is surrounded both horizontally and vertically by an intermediate breeder zone contg. fissionable Pu and U-238 breeder material. This in turn is surrounded horizontally and vertically by a blanket zone of breder U-238. Zoning is achieved by differential filling of three sets of fuel rods namely an inner, an intermediate and an outer set. The central set has five different layers of filling, the second set three layers and the third set is uniformly filled with U-238.
