Abstract

Crude acid contng. 4- or 3-carboxybenzaldehyde and other impurities in diammonium salt form is reduced in aqs. soln. in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst at 70 degrees C. The soln. is then heated at 86-100, pref. 90-100 degrees C. to precipitate the monoammonium salt with is filtered off and converted back to the free acid form. Expensive, corrosion-resistant apparatus is not required.
