Abstract
The pearls of a styrene polymer (or copolymer with up to 80% of another monomer) are made by aqs. suspension polymsn. of the styrene (mixt.) in a concn. of 20 wt.% of reaction medium to coalescing concn; (pref. 45 - 70 wt.%), using a colloid protector (such as PVA, PVP, hydroxyalkylcellulose, Al2O3 or CaCO3), opt. a surfactant, and sufficient agitation to give a shearing action on polymer pearls once reaction medium thickens (e.g. tip speed 1.45 - 7 m/s.) Gives better handle of polymer feed to processing machinery, with less danger of personnel slipping.
