Abstract

In a cyclic thermochemical method for prodn. of hydrogen from water, SO2 is reacted with methanol in the presence of water in a molten mass of molten sulphate from which a corresp. pyrosulphate or bisulphate can be formed, the methanol giving methane or a methylated cpd. from which hydrogen is formed and the methanol is reformed, by sepn. of the SO3 from the molten salt mass and subsequent decompsn. of the SO3, SO2 and O2 are formed and the SO2 is recycled. The reaction between the SO2 and the methanol is accelerated by the presence of I2, dithiocyanogen or dicyanogen. It is not necessary to use halogens at temps. >500 degrees C as in prior art, so that high temp. corrosion problems are reduced.
