Abstract
An aq. sedimentation stable, non-gelled polyurethane dispersion dispersible in the absence of an emulsifier comprises reacting a polymer (I) contg. besides - NCO gps. salt gps. with monovalent associated ions having a salt. gp. equiv. wt. of =6000, is practically free of active H atoms and is prepd. from an organic polyisocyanate (II) and a molecule (III) contg. >=2 active H atoms per mole with an active H contg. (IV) in which the active H reacts quicker with the -NCO gps. than water to a polyurethane having intrinsic viscosity =2.0dl/g. (II) and (III) contain is not >1 gram-mol. of cpds. having a functionality of >=3 per 500 g. of (II) and (III) and the equiv. ratio of -NCO in (II) to active H in (III) is >=4.3. (II) and (III) are reacted in an aq. medium, water being the main component. The dispersions are stable and esp. suitable for coatings having good gloss, adhesiveness, tear strength, impact strength, hardness and resistance to solvent and moisture.
