Cette invention a trait à la préparation de 4-nitro-imidazoles par nitration d'imidazoles avec l'acide nitrique en présence d'urée, on fait réagir des imidazoles avec élimination simultanée de l'eau du mélange réactionnel par distillation Les composés sont des catalyseurs pour des réactions de polymérisation et de condensation, notamment pour des réactions avec des époxydes, pour la condensation d'aldols, pour la préparation de polyuréthanes, pour des réactions de condensation avec des esters maloniques et acétylacétiques, ainsi que des produits intermédiaires pour la fabrication de colorants, d'adjuvants pour textiles et d'insecticides.
