Abstract

The cutters possess a baseplate fitted with a fixed handle, and a pivot for a movable handle. The two handles can be squeezed together by the pressure of a single human hand. On the baseplate is a holder provided with radial slots so that an optical fibre coupling can be located on the cutters. The projecting end of a fibre is clamped on both sides of the zone to be cut. When the cutter handles are squeezed, a knife make a transverse notch in the fibre, and further pressure on the handles bends the fibre over a bending mandrel with a prescribed radius, the mandrel also being located in the holder. The result is a clean, mirror-like fracture of the fibre very suitable for joining to another fibre. The cutters are not sensitive to excessive hand pressure or side loads, and can be used in a similar fashion to a pair of wire cutters.
