Abstract

The magnetic character reader has a feed slot through which the document carrying the magnetic characters are fed past a read head. Each character comprises a number of spaced vertical lines, with a decoding system measuring the time between two successive lines and two series buffer registers recording the times for two adjacent pairs of lines. A divider divides one stored time by the other and a comparator compares the result with a number of thresholds, for recoding independent of the rate at which the document is fed through the reader. The subsequent decoding circuit has a 7 bit register, a comparator logic and a 7 bit comparator for comparison with known code combinations.
