Abstract

Contraceptive tampon comprises a cellular, synthetic sponge having semi-open cells and impregnated with a moisture of a spermicidal composition and a slow release medium. The sponge is usually foamed polyethylene of M.wt. 15,000 to 35,000 and free of foaming agent, an insolubilised polyvinyl alcohol or formed of fibrin. Typical spermicides are alkylbenzalkonium cpds. opt. with other spermicides e.g. benzethonium chloride and phenylmercuric nitrate. The slow release medium is pref. a carboxymethylcellulose gel stabilised by methyl para-hydroxy-benzoate preservative. Contraceptive tampon having both a spermicidal and a mechanical action.
