Abstract
The polymerization of unsaturated hydrocarbons, to produce mainly dimers and trimers, is effected at a temperature of above 250 DEG C. up to the cracking temperature and elevated pressure in the presence of a compound or element which under the reaction conditions forms HCl, HBr, HI or H2S. Apart from the respective elements and their hydrides, many organic sulphur and halogen compounds are specified. Olefins of 2-20 carbon atoms may be polymerized at 250 DEG C. to the cracking temperature and above 200 p.s.i. for 0.001-300 minutes using a mol. ratio of olefin to hydrogen halide or sulphide of 10-500:1.
