In photographic apparatus e. g. an optical bench camera or an enlarger a carrier 1 for a lens or for photo-sensitive material is mounted on a guiding rod 2 having a fixed member 21 attached thereto, which member engages a groove 32 of a rotatable driving member 3. For normal movement of the carrier 1 on the rod 2, the member 3 is rotated and the carrier moves slowly along the rod, a lever 7 being in the position of Fig. 2 (not shown). To move the carrier rapidly along the rod, the lever 7 is turned to the right (Fig. 2) to rotate an eccentric 8 which presses a bearing 4 down to compress a spring 5 and to disengage the groove 32 and the member 21. Rotation of the lever 7 to the position (P) (Fig. 2) causes the eccentric 8 to press a brake block 72 into frictional contact with the rod 2, thus stopping the movement of the carrier along the rod. The member 3 may be provided with resilient elements by means of which it engages the rod 2, the eccentric acting directly on the member 3. Alternatively, the carrier may be moved along the rod by means of a geared transmission, e. g. a rack and pinion.
