Abstract

A composite material comprises a top textile layer of knitted fabric and a bottom plastics layer of plasticised polyvinyl chloride which has been foamed and which contains a powdered elastomer. The textile layer may be a teased, teased and cut, or veloured knitted fabric. The knitted fabric may be made of synthetic fibres, e.g. polyamides such as polycaprolactam, polyesters, or polyacrylonitrile, or of natural textile fibres, e.g. wool. The elastomer may be rubber powder. An intermediate layer of polyvinyl chloride containing an adhesion promoter may be disposed between the knitted fabric and the plastics layer. The material may be lined on the underside with a woven fabric e.g. of jute. The plastics layer may have an adhesive layer protected by a pull-off foil e.g. silicone-treated paper, on the side to be laid in contact with a floor. The composite material may be manufactured by applying a polyvinyl chloride paste containing an adhesion-promoter e.g. an isocyanate-modified polyester, to the underside of synthetic knitted fabric, gelling by heat treatment, applying a polyvinyl chloride paste containing a foaming agent e.g. azodicarbonamide, and a powdered elastomer, foaming by heat treatment and gelling. The foamable polyvinyl chloride paste may also contain a filler, a colouring agent and/or a stabiliser. The composite material can be shaped e.g. by vacuum deep drawing, and may be used as floor covering, for example, in motor vehicles.
