Abstract
1,195,233. Non woven fabric, paper. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 26 July, 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 34300/67. Headings D1R and D2B. An expanded nonwoven fabric is made by impregnating a web with a binder and a foamaible liquid, vaporising the liquid within at least a portion of a fibrous web to puff at least a portion of the web then stabilising (or bonding) at least a portion of the puffed portion by setting the binder. The web can be impregnated with a solution or emulsion of the binder, e.g. an acrylic compound, if desired, only at discrete portions of the web. The binder may be present in the web before impregnation with the foamable liquid. The latter may be a solvent for the binder during heating. The foamable liquid can be water-containing fatty acid or sulphonated alkyl ester foaming agents. The binder can also be present in the foamable liquid impregnant or as thermoplastic fibres or powder, e.g. plasticised cellulose acetate. Preferably the web is heated dielectrically using electrolytes, e.g. NH 4 CL in the foamable liquid if necessary so that the web is heated only whilst the liquid is present. The degree of puffing varies with the thickness of the web, the conductance of the liquid, the amount and foamability of the liquid and the energy level of the dielectric heater. After puffing; the binder may be concentrated near the faces of the web, the web may contain randomly arranged fibre strata and fibre chambers, and the fibre density adjacent at least one surface may be greater than in the centre of the web. The initial web can be air-laid or wet-laid. A wet-laid web may be pressed before puffing. The web may contain fibres of cotton, linen, hemp, silk, wool, wood pulp, rayon, acetate, polyester, acrylic or modacrylic compounds. The fibres preferably have a length of less than 0.5 inch.
