Abstract

1,237,198. Crash barriers. CHRISTIANI & NIELSEN Ltd. 31 Oct., 1968 [8 Jan., 1968], No. 1165/68. Heading E1G. A resiliently-mounted extensible crash barrier comprises front and rear rails 3, 4 carried one above the other by pivoted arcuate or other brackets 5 which swing upwardly on impact, each bracket 5 being connected to a ground support 8 by a pivot pin 18 and a hydraulic or other resilient device 13. The pin 18 and/or the bolts or rivets anchoring the support 8 may be designed to yield on excessive impact. The device 13 may comprise a spring or a rubber block but as shown comprises a piston 22 having a through passage or slot 22a which cooperates with a tapering land 22b in a cylinder 20 to provide a progressively increasing resistance to flow of fluid through the piston as it moves into the cylinder. The cylinder 20 is only partly filled, e.g. to level 23- with liquid so that initial bracket movement is unopposed except for the resistance of air flow through passage 22a. Each rail 3, 4 is extensible in that it comprises a series of tubes yieldably connected end to end adjacent the brackets either, Fig. 3 (not shown), through inserts (28) and slidable pin and slot connections (27), or, Fig. 4 (not shown), through stretchable internal rods or cables (34) and coupling inserts (35). A gutter 2 reduces the effective height of an impacting vehicle. Each bracket may carry additional crash rails. In a modification the device 13 is arranged to operate in tension, the pivotal mountings of the bracket 5 and cylinder 20 being interchanged.
