Abstract

1287745 Proofing against water; stiffening fabrics PERMASHIELD CHEMICALS Ltd 16 March 1970 [18 Dec 1968] 60260/68 Heading D1P Fabrics are rendered water-repellent by treatment with a solution in a volatile organic solvent of a hydrophobic metallic soap, paraffin wax and a minor amount of polyethylene wax and/or hydrophobic silicone. The soap may be aluminium stearate (optionally polymeric). Other specified additives are; a coumaroneindene resin to enhance fabric stiffness; a volatile organic acid (e.g. acetic acid)-cationic surfactant mixture to give a pH of 4.5-5.5; and butyl titanate as a silicone curing catalyst. The solvent may be xylene and/or perchloroethylene. The treatment may form part of a dry cleaning process or the solution may be applied as an aerosol.
