Abstract
1302584 Apparatus for spinning conjugate filaments TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 23 June 1970 30365/70 Heading B5B Apparatus for spinning "islands-in-a-sea" type synthetic conjugate filaments comprises at least one spinning unit which contains, in combination, (A) a first passage 34 (Fig. 5) for supplying the sea constituent polymeric liquid, which has an inlet connected via passage 35, annular chamber 26 and supply conduits 24 to a source of sea constituent polymer, and which branches to a plurality of outlets 20; (B) a plurality of second passages 33 for supplying the "island" constituent polymeric liquid, each inlet of which is connected to a chamber 27 and supply conduits 25 for the "island" constituents, and each outlet of which opens into the branched outlets of the said first passages; (C) a uniting chamber 39, for uniting the composite streams formed by the convergence of the "island" streams with the sea "streams". having an optional cylindrical space 41 (Fig. 7) connected to the outlets of the first and second passages and a substantially funnel-shaped space 42 which satisfy the relationship: wherein x = height of the cylindrical space in mm. and # degrees = the angle of convergence of the funnel-shaped space; and (D) aspinning orifice 40 connected to the lower opening of the uniting chamber. As in Fig. 5 the height x of the cylindrical space in the uniting chamber is preferably zero and # degrees is at most 75 degrees. The spinneret 23 preferably also comprises a plurality of third passages 36, formed in the third plate 31 of the spinneret, each inlet of which opens into the corresponding branched outlet of the first passage in a position facing a corresponding outlet of a second passage 33 and each outlet of which is connected to a uniting chamber. The apparatus may also comprise (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown) fourth and fifth passages which are located so as to connect the first passage 34 directly with the uniting chamber 39. Fourth passages 61 are located outside the third passages and supply the outside of the uniting chamber with "sea" constituent polymer. Fifth passages 62 are located on and/or close to the axis of the uniting chamber to supply the centre of the chamber with "sea" constituent polymer. Figs. 12-16 (not shown) show other modifications of the relative positions of the outlets and inlets and the first and second passages together with changes in their relative cross-sectional areas which may be effected in order to improve the quality of the final "islands-in-a-sea" type filament.
