Abstract
1372425 Electromagnets; electrically released switches SIEMENS AG 17 Nov 1971 [18 Nov 1970] 53464/71 Headings H1P and H1N [Also in Division H2K] A holding magnet (Fig. 3) comprises limbs 1, 2 of nickel-iron alloy splayed out into two poles engaging a spring-loaded armature 3; one pole having an excitation coil 5. The remaining ends of the limbs are separated by an aluminium foil and clamped between mild steel plates 11, 12 enclosing oppositely poled faces of a permanent magnet 6. The saturation magnetization of plates 11, 12 exceeds that of limbs 1, 2. Part of the magnet flux is shunted between limbs 1, 2 and the remainder retains armature 3 against the spring. On excitation coil 5 opposes and cancels the flux in limbs 1, 2 so that armature 3 is released and, e.g., operates a trip 26 to break the circuit contacts 29 of a load 31 (Fig. 1) within an earthed enclosure 30 fed from supply phase and neutral. The coil is energized from winding 25 of a circular core 22 threaded by the load conductors 23, 24 normally carrying equally opposed currents, so that unbalance on an earth fault occurring excites the coil and opens the circuit.
