Abstract

1428873 Preparation of simulated leather KURARAY CO LTD 21 March 1974 [31 March 1973 7 May 1973] 12686/74 Heading B2E Simulated leather, e.g. for making shoe uppers, is prepared by impregnating a fibrous substrate with a polyurethane elastomer (A- polymer) and forming a surface layer of a different polyurethane elastomer (B-polymer). A solution or dispersion of A-polymer, e.g. prepared by polymerisation of 1 mole of polyethylene adipate with 5 moles diphenyl methane-4, 4'-diisocyanate and 4 moles of ethylene glycol in dimethylformamide, is used to impregnate the substrate, e.g. a non-woven fabric weighing 360 g/m<SP>2</SP>, and a solution or dispersion of A-polymer and B-polymer, e.g. prepared by polymerisation of 1 mole of polycaprolactone, 4 moles diphenylmethane 4, 4'-diisocyanate and 3 moles ethylene glycol, is coated upon the impregnated substrate and a solution or dispersion of B-polymer is coated on the polymer mixture solution and the polymer solution and/or dispersions are coagulated in a coagulating bath, e.g. 35% aqueous dimethylformamide or the polymer solution or dispersion impregnating the substrate is coagulated in a coagulating bath, a solution or dispersion of B-polymer, with or without A- polymer, is coated or the substrate and this is coagulated by drying, a solution or dispersion of B-polymer is coated upon the previous layer and coagulated in a coagulating bath. Other B-polymers which may be used include the polyurethane prepared by polymerising 1 mole of polytetramethylene glycol, 3 moles of diphenylmethane-4, 4'-diisocyanate and 2 moles propylene glycol. Other A-polymers include a polyurethane prepared from polyethylene adipate, diphenylmethane 4, 4'-diisocyanate and 1. 4-butane diol. Many other polyurethane ingredients are specified. The polyurethanes may be mixed with less than 50% of a compatible polymer, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyurea, polyvinyl formel, polymethyl acrylate, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl acetate, cellulose derivatives, copolymers of vinylidine chloride and acrylonitrile, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate and natural or synthetic rubber. Suitable substrates include nylon, polyester and nylon and polystyrene mixture. Pigments, e.g. carbon black and TiO 2 may be added as well as dyes, fillers, stabilisers and coagulation controlling agents.
