Abstract

1443473 Styrene polymer compositions CANON KK and DENKI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 29 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 50243/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Compositions comprising (1) 30 to 85 weight per cent of a styrene homopolymer or copolymer, (2) 5 to 68 weight per cent of a chlorinated paraffin containing at least 30 weight per cent of chlorine and (3) 2 to 24 weight per cent of one or more aromatic compounds of formulae wherein P and Q are alkylene, R, S and T are H or alkyl and l, m and n are integers; may be prepared by mixing and kneading the components; or by mixing (2) and (3) with the monomer(s) of (1), dispersing the mixture water and polymerizing the monomer(s) in the presence of free radical initiators and dispersing agents. The styrene may be copolymerized with an alkyl- or halostyrene, vinyl naphthalene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, butadiene, chloroprene, vinyl or vinylidene chloride or an acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid ester. The products may be used in inks and paints, or mixed with carriers as electrophotographic toners, and as rubber tackifiers. Examples describe the preparation of compositions by mixing chlorinated paraffin with polystyrene and (1) diphenylbutane and (3) diphenylhexane, 4-n-butyl diphenylethane, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diethyl diphenylethane, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl diphenylpropane, diphenylbutane, 4-n-butyl diphenylbutane, p-diphenylethyl benzene and mdiphenylethyl benzene; and with (2) styrene/ acrylonitrile copolymer and p-diphenylethyl benzene, and by dispersion polymerization of styrene in the presence of chlorinated paraffin and (4) diphenylbutane, (7) p-diphenylethyl benzene and (8) 3,5-bis-(α-methylbenzyl) toluene; of (5) styrene/acrylonitrile/methyl methacrylate mixture in the presence of chlorinated paraffin and 3,5-bis-(m-tolylethyl) toluene and of (6) styrene/α-methylstyrene mixture in the presence of chlorinated paraffin and 4,41-dimethyl diphenylpropane. The products of dispersion polymerization are said to contain graft polymers on the chlorinated paraffin.
