Abstract

19,829. Heal, W. E. Sept. 10. Glass furnaces. - Relates to the manufacture of sheet or plate glass in any required thickness. The melting-tank 5 is separated by a bridge 10 from a chamber 8 containing molten tin, alloy of tin and copper, or other fusible material 9. Gas is admitted through apertures 7, 12, 31 to heat the tank 5 and chamber 8. The purified molten glass flows over the bridge 10 on to the surface of the molten metal, where it floats out into sheet form. It is drawn by rolls 3, 4 on to the carrying-rolls 19 of the annealing-oven 18. The gas issuing from the ports 31 is rearwardly directed, and superfuses the edges of the sheet as it passes into the wider portion 2<a> of the chamber 2. The bearings of the upper roll 3 are adjustable by means of handwheels, bevel gear, and screwed shafts so as to vary the opening between the rolls. The rolls are of iron, covered with asbestos cord wound on in even layers. The glass sheet passes over a mat 33 of asbestos where it leaves the chamber 2<a>. The glass protects the molten metal from oxidation.
