Abstract

17,536. Forster, J. Aug. 30. Hides and skins, tanned or tawed, treating.-Scouring and setting-out machines are constructed so that the tools operate radially from the centre of the skin to stretch simultaneously the hide in several directions. The tools 1 are carried in holders 2 pivoted to connecting-rods 3 reciprocated by crank disks 4 which are driven from the main shaft 5 by bevel-gearing ; the tools 9 which work the back are actuated by a double-throw crank 10. The tools are guided in their reciprocating motion by a plate 11, Fig. 5, having grooves 13 with which engage slides 14 pivoted to the upper portion 15 of the tool-holders. The table 20 which carries the hide is movable on a carriage 21 reciprocated by suitable gearing towards the centre of the machine. In order that the tools may yield laterally to any inequality in the leather, the tool-holder is made in two portions, of which one part 2 pivoted to the connecting-rod is secured to the tool by rods 17 resiliently controlled by springs 16. The other part 15 rigidly mounted on the connecting-rod is formed with a tail 19 which enters a slot in the tool.
