Hopper wagons ; doors, wagon. - In hopperbottom railway and like wagons adapted to discharge towards either side or near their centre lines, an opening is formed at the bottom of each hopper ; and on opposite sides of the opening other openings are formed, the several openings being fitted with external doors in the form of curved plates pivoted about their centres of curvature. A wagon body is described, having sloping sides and ends, which is divided transversely by a ridge, the parts of the hopper on each side of the ridge being formed with three openings arranged as shown. The upper edges of the side openings are strengthened by angle-irons h, and angle-irons i form the margins of the bottom openings. Each opening is provided with a door consisting of a curved plate f pivoted about a longitudinal shaft g, the side doors abutting when closed against the angle-irons i, and the bottom door swinging the angle-iron i on one side and abutting, when closed, against the other, which is made deeper. Shoots k extend from the angleirons i to the sides of the wagon. Door - operating appliances. - The doors are actuated by longitudinal shafts l, m, o extending across both hopper openings and provided with pinions gearing with racks s. t, u placed preferably at each end of each door, the shafts l, m, o being connected by bevel-gear with inclined shafts w having hand-wheels v at one end of the vehicle. Instead of bevel-gear, worm-gear, ratchet-mechanism, or an arrangement of levers may be employed, and each door may be actuated by separate mechanism operated by hand-wheels placed some at one end and others at the other end of the vehicle. In a modification, the doors may be fixed to the shafts g, which are turned to open or close the doors.
