Abstract

A process for producing killed Trypanosoma cruzi organisms suitable for use in a vaccine against Chagas disease comprises treating a suspension of from 1 x 10<6> to 6 x 10<9> Trypanosoma cruzi organisms per ml, with at least 0.5 % (g/v) of an acylating agent or of a mono- or dialdehyde having up to 6 carbon atoms excluding the aldehydic carbon atom(s). Trypanosoma may be subjected to a treatment capable of breaking the cell structure, whereby the imunologically active component(s) of the Trypanosoma are freed. These are isolated from the other cell constituents and may themselves be used in a vaccine.
