Fluid-pressure. -- A graduated release of compressed-air brakes is obtained by the use of an additional train pipe which, in the release position of the triple valve, is connected to the auxiliary reservoir. The additional train pipe may also be connected to the brake cylinder during a brake application. The triple valve comprises main and graduating slide valves g, a, and in the release position shown in Fig. 1, the additional train pipe L is connected through ports and passages 1 - - 5, 14 to the auxiliary reservoir G. If, after a brake application, in which the auxiliary reservoir is connected to the brake cylinder K by ports and passages 14, 17, 16, 15, 12, 10, the pressure in the train pipe F is increased for a graduated release, the triple valve moves to release position, in which the brake cylinder is connected to atmosphere through ports and passages 10 - - 6. When, however, the pressure in the valve chamber II, connected to the auxiliary reservoir by a passage 18, fust exceeds the increased train pipe pressure in the chamber I, the graduating-valve a is moved to lap position, in which the brake cylinder is cut off from the exhaust passage 6 and the pipe L is cut off from the auxiliary reservoir. In the form shown in Fig. 7, with the main and graduating slide valves in application position, the additional train pipe is connected to the brake cylinder by ports and passages 1, 11, 13, 16, 15, 12, 10, a non-return valve c being inserted in the passage 14 to prevent passage of air from the additional train pine to the auxiliary reservoir in this position of the triple valve. The passage 13 may be so small that only sufficient air is supplied through it to compensate for leakages from the brake cylinder.
