Abstract

A collapsible box trailer providing the capability to be reduced in height by means of folding down the front, side and rear sections to a flat state and a retractable towing bar to allow the trailer to be placed upon end to minimise storage space when not in use yet still maintain all the characteristics of a conventional box trailer when in operation. Removable mud guards may also be provided.

Description

PAGE 1
LAY FLAT BOX TRAILER
Box trailers come in many varied sizes however the combination of wheel dimensions and trailer depth mean storage space becomes a problem.
The proposed design enables a box trailer to be easily collapsed and placed on end for efficient storage space yet continues to hold all the strength characteristics of a conventional trailer.
At present there are on the market trailers made from aluminium which sole design purpose was to be made lightweight enough that they could be placed on end for easy storage, however these still take up a considerable amount of space.

LAY FLAT BOX TRAILER
A description of the workings for said invention is as follows using diagrams as a reference: - Drawing 1 shows trailer in its fully assembled state.
Drawing 2 shows the trailer in an intermediate state where the front and rear retaining walls have been folded.
Drawing 3 shows the trailer in a fully collapsed state where by the left and right retaining walls have been folded to lay on top of the front and rear retaining walls and the mudguards removed this is the trailer in its collapsed state.
Drawing 4 shows the trailer in its collapsed state with suggested storage position at the rear of a conventional garage.
Using drawing 1 as a reference the trailer consists of a rigid chassis with a telescopic draw bar 7 removable mudguards 5 and hinged sides 1 2 3 4.
In order to collapse the trailer the removal of four spring bolts 9 shown in drawing 1 situated on the left and right sides of the front and rear retaining walls 1 and 4 is necessary, the front and rear of the trailer can be laid inward onto the bed of the trailer 10. The two sides 2 and 3 can be laid inward also on top of the front and rear walls this is made possible by the side walls being made shallower than the front and rear walls and the side chassis rails being made higher to an equivalent measurement equal to the depth of both the chassis and front or rear walls when laid on top of one another in a collapsed position. It is then necessary to remove the mudguards 5 these are secured to the sides using mechanical fasteners (poppers) then the final operation is to remove a steel pin and r clip 8 from the draw bar and slide the bar inwards the trailer can then be wheeled to a suitable location in its collapsed form and placed upon end against a wall as shown in figure 4.
To assemble the trailer in its towing form the reversal of the fore mentioned procedure is necessary.
