Abstract
Disclosed is a resonant mass separator (RMS) and method of resonant mass separation are based on passing of continuous or gently modulated ion beams through electric field of an isochronous open trap so that ions isochronously oscillate (reflect or turn) in one plane and slowly progress in the orthogonal direction. Spatially localized excitation electric field is energized periodically, preferably at much higher frequencies compared to ion oscillations. Spatially local AC excitation within isochronous open traps is found to produce an effect of resonant stabilization and effective transmission of selected narrow mass bands, while deflecting or defocusing other ionic components. The open trap may employ a dipolar RF filter, or electrostatic sector multi-turn analyzer, or multi-reflecting analyzerbased on ion mirrors. Preferably, continuous ion beams are pulsed modulated to reach near unity transmission at high (for separators) resolving power of 10,000. Tandem MS-MS is the most preferred application of RMS. In one method, multiple parent ion windows are passed through the RMS for tandem analysis, thus reaching higher throughput of MS and MS-MS analyses.
