Abstract

292,013. Mayer, P. OÀ Nov. 9, 1927. Index type-wheel machines. - A type-wheel and setting-devices therefor and an ink-supply roller are mounted on a lever which rocks on a vertical pivot and is moved horizontally towards the platen to effect impression; the lever may carry a feed-pawl which co-operates with a rack on the carriage to effect letter-spacing, and the typewheel may be associated with case-shift mechanism. In the machine shown in plan in Fig. 1. a lever 3 pivoted on a vertical pin 2 on the base 1 is provided with a pin 6 supporting a type-wheel 5, the lever being moved towards the platen 7 by means of a fingerpiece 4 to effect impression. Setting-mechanism for the type-wheel comprises a rack 18 mounted on the lever and gearing with a pinion 24 on the type-wheel. The rack is actuated by a knob 50 secured to a spring blade 20 pivoted to the rack, the knob being set with reference to an index plate 21 and having a ball 22 for engaging recesses 23 therein. Aligning for impression.-The pinion 24 on the type-wheel 5 co-operates with an aligning-tooth 43. Case-shift mechanism.-The type-wheel 5 has three rings of type and is raised to bring the middle or bottom ring to the printing line by depressing a key 34 which is pivoted on a lever 33 engaging the type-wheel. On depressing the key vertically, the bottom ring is brought to the printing line, but if the key is rocked before being depressed it is arrested by a stop 38 and the middle ring is brought to the printing line. Roller inking-arrangements.-An ink-roller 25 is mounted on a yielding part 30 of an arm 26 which is pivoted on a pin 27 on the base and has a lug 28 engaging a notched part, 29 of the lever 3. On moving the lever, the ink roller passes over the type-wheel and over an ink-supply roller 31 which is mounted on the lever. Letter-spacing mechanism.-A rack 9 on the carriage 8 co-operates with a pawl 11 consisting of a bell-crank which is slotted to engage a pin 10 on the lever 1 and is connected to returning- springs 12, 16. On moving the lever, the pawl engages the rack to effect letter-spacing, and then engages a stop 14 and moves idly on the pin during the further movement of the lever to effect impression. In some cases the pawl is merely pivoted on the pin and is arranged to yield on engaging the stop. The lever is normally arrested by a pin 40 on the base 1, but when it is necessary to effect spacing without impression a stop-sleeve 39 on the pin is depressed to arrest the lever before the type-wheel reaches the platen. Paper-shields.-For limiting the length of the typed line, the carriage 8 is provided with a coloured transparent shield 45 covering the end of the platen. The shield is mounted on a pivot 44 and can be raised to permit of typing in the margin.
