Electric and magnetic. - A n electromagnetic brake for use for example on rail and road vehicles of cranes and hoisting gear comprises a multipolar field electromagnet, a solid steel drum revolving in the field of the magnet and fins on the rotor for dissipating heat. The drum 4 is joined by spokes 5 to a hub 6 on the shaft it is desired to brake and carries a fan 9 for drawing air over the radiating fins 7. Further cooling fins 12, 14 are provided. Brass and asbestos screens 15 protect the windings of the poles 3 of the electromagnet from the heat of the drum. Spring washers 17 press the windings against the screens. When provided on a vehicle the pedal cutting out the controlling resistance operates a mechanical brake in the last part of its movement. In a modification the yoke 2 of the electromagnet carries the bearings for the shaft 1 of the drum and is provided with supporting feet. In a modification for an internal combustion engine, the flywheel of the engine forms the drum, and the electromagnet frame is a prolongation of the engine casing. In a further modification the drum surrounds the electromagnets and fan blades may be fitted inside the drum to draw air through holes in the drum and over the magnets. In a brake for a vehicle the lowermost poles of the electromagnet may be omitted to give greater road clearance.
