Abstract

Acetic acid is obtained by oxidizing acetaldehyde in a continuous process with oxygen or mixtures thereof with inert gases, the quantity of oxygen used considerably exceeding that theoretically required for the oxidation, so that dangerous accumulations of peracetic acid are prevented. The process may be carried out, preferably at temperatures between 55 DEG and 80 DEG C. and at pressures of about 1,5 atmospheres, by allowing acetaldehyde to flow into a mixing vessel together with a quantity of oxidizing gas containing an excess of oxygen of at least 50 per cent. Cooling means may be provided, and the reactants may be mixed by means of stirrers, or by causing them to pass through one or several turbo-mixers. The reaction product may be purified by distillation. The waste gases may be treated for the recovery of acetaldehyde first in a washing tower supplied with the crude reaction product, and then in another tower supplied with acetic acid free from acetaldehyde. Examples are given.
