Abstract
378,024. Making paper. HADDAN, R., 31, Bedford Street, Strand, London.- (Raffold International Corporation; P.O. Box 8, Shawsheen Village Station, Andover, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) May 1, 1931, No. 12920. [Class 96.] In making sized paper filled with alkaline filler, the filler or the acidic material such as alum or both are added to the mix under conditions which tend to minimize either the time or the intimacy of contact or both, the addition preferably taking place at or after the passage of the paper furnish from the dilution box when the mix is dilute and the interval to the passage over the web-forming device is short. The paper may be produced by adding to the fibrous material in the beater, size, alum and alkaline filler and then re-precipitating the size by adding more alum at the dilute stage. Any of the three ingredients size, alum or alkaline filler may be added alone to the beater and the other two be added at the dilute stage or if size is added at the beater stage filler or alum may be added with it and alum or filler be added later at the dilute stage. All three ingredients may be added at the dilute stage, previously precipitated alum size being substituted for the size and alum if desired. If alum is introduced into a beater containing alkaline filler, for example from " broke " or trim from the w.re, additional alum is added at the dilute stage to reprecipitate the size, but when such mixes are treated, " broke " &c. may be treated separately and the alkaline filler be added to it, the mixture being incorporated with the main mix at the dilute stage. In carrying out the operations, the amount of alum used is twice or more times the amount of rosin in the size and the size may consist of or comprise the size-paraffin emulsion described in Specification 333,620, [Class 96, Paper &c.]. If a paraffin emulsion made with an insoluble subsbance such as clay or alkaline filler or a gum, such as gum arabic or gum ghatti, to which dextrin may have been added, is used two substances which mutually precipitate one another, such as rosin, size, and alum, are used, the precipitation gathering the disperse phase of the emulsion on to the fibre. Sodium silicate or sodium aluminate may be added to or may replace the size. The action of the alkaline filler may be temporarily delayed just prior to its incorporation in the mix, by the addition of about 4 per cent of alum to reduce its alkalinity or by precipitating about it a small quantity of alum size. Sulphuric acid, sodium bisulphate, zinc salts or other aluminium salts may replace the alum and a synthetic rosin acid be used in place of natural rosin. Suitable alkaline fillers are calcium carbonate in the form of lime mud, calcium carbonate, magnesium basic carbonate, calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, &c.
