Abstract

Convention date, Nov. 24, 1937. , [Class 106 (i)] [Also in Group XX] A surveying instrument for direct application to the, terrain comprises a pair of legs 2, 3 pivoted at 1 and each provided with a pin 38 at a distance from the axis proportional to the length of the leg. The two pins 38 co-operate with two slots 14, 15, at right angles in a frame 10, 11, 12, provided with spirit levels 24, 25. As shown, sliding cursors 32 are located on the arms, 11, 12 by engagement with pins 38. In use, the points 4, 5 are placed in contact with the terrain and the frame 10, 11, 12 adjusted on the pins 38 until one of the levels 24, 25 is horizontal. The position of the cursors 32 on the graduated arms 11, 12, then indicates the horizontal and vertical distances, respectively, between the points 4, 5. In a modification, the points 4, 5 are mounted on. a rod at a fixed distance apart and the pins 38 are carried by the rod so that the line connecting the pins is parallel to the line connecting the points.
