522,425. Compound sheet materials; folding and binding edges. DAWKINS, R. E. Nov. 11, 1938, Nos. 32850/38 and 27726/39. [Classes 42 (i) and 140] Material such as paper and cardboard having a layer of cellulosic material such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane " extending over one surface, over the edge and in part at least over the other surface, is made by applying the protective layer to the basematerial as the latter is unwound from a reel and re-reeled. The protecting material projecting beyond the base material on one or both sides may be adhered thereto in a machine of the kind described in Specification 444,652, the means for turning over the projecting portion being situated between the adhesive applying means and the re-reeling device as shown in Fig. 3, the compound sheet material from pressing rolls 1, 1 passes over a backing plate 9 to which is attached a plough-like member 5 which turns in the protective layer which is prevented from springing back by guide rolls 7 frictionally or power driven. The margin is. finally pressed on to the base by a weight-orspring-loaded roll 14. In alternative means for folding the edge of the protective material shown in Fig. 7, one or more fingers 15 are adjustably mounted on a rod 17 which is connected by a universal joint to a supporting shaft.
