Abstract

603,473. Trench-excavating machines. WITHERS, J. S. (Parsons Co.). Dec. 19, 1945, No. 34418. [Class 68 (i)] A trench-excavating machine comprises a tractor unit A and an excavating wheel D which rotates on a supporting framework 9. The framework is constrained by arms 32 and cable gear 18, 21 to pivot about bearings 33 formed on a differential gear-box E mounted on the tractor chassis. The wheel D is driven from an engine 1 through a differential gear E <SP>1</SP>, shafts 35 and 36, sprockets and chains 51, 52, 53 and 54, shafts 55 and sprockets 57 which mesh with teeth formed on the inside of the wheel drum. To prevent damage to the engine 1 should the wheel D stall, a friction clutch 60 is fitted between the drum 59 of the sprocket 52 and the shaft 36 to absorb the engine power. A transverse conveyer is driven by suitable gearing from the longer of the shafts 55.
