Abstract
630,077. Hand-irons. WILKINSON, G. H., DIVALL, R. W., and METCALFE, C. July 31, 1946, No. 22751. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group XI] An iron is provided with a pivotally-mounted member 22 for supporting the iron out of contact with the work at an inclination to the member, the necessary angular movement between the iron and member 22 to cause the latter to take up its supporting position being provided by the operator exerting pressure on a support-operating member 23 at the rear of the sole plate. The member 22 consists of a pair of arms which extend on opposite sides of the sole plate and are accommodated in recesses in the latter when the iron is in use. The operating member 23 extends rearwardly of the arms 22 and is provided with two upstanding arms 24 which pivot on a rod 19 carried by a pair of brackets 17 formed on a support 12 mounted on the clamp plate 3 of the heating element 2. The upper ends of the arms 24 are provided with slots 25 forming guides for a cam follower 26 in the form of a rod which is urged by springs 27 into contact with cam surfaces on the upper edges of the brackets 17. When the iron is to be supported out of contact with the work, it is moved angularly so as to press the member 23 against the work, thus causing the cam surfaces on the brackets 17 to move relatively to the follower 26 and tension the springs 17 ; after the follower has passed the crest 20 of the cam surfaces, it drops into the dwell portion 21 and is held therein by the springs 27, with the sole plate out of contact with the work. Downward pressure on the iron then causes the follower 26 to move to its original position, and the arms 22 are again accommodated in the recesses in the sole plate. Current is supplied to the iron from a cable 29 through a rotatable connector 30 (see Group XI) which may be rotated so as to permit the cable to enter the iron from either side. The hollow body 5 of the iron, which is moulded with the handle 6 from thermo-plastic material, is secured to the clamp plate 3 by screws 7, the heads of which are contained in recesses 8 closed by plates 9 in the body. The Provisional Specification describes also the support as being in the form of a single arm, and the use of frictional means at the pivot of the support, instead of springs, for maintaining it in its angularly-adjusted position.
