683,030. Change-speed gearing. VICTORIA MACHINE TOOL CO., Ltd., FRYE, J., and SEIDEL, A. Dec. 1, 1950 [Dec. 1, 1949], No. 30853/49. Class 80 (ii). In a change-speed gear with aligned input and output members 3, 1, reduced drive is obtained via a gear 4 splined on the member 3, a double lay-shaft gear 7, 8 and a gear 5 splined on the member 1, while direct drive is obtained by moving both gears 4 and 5 axially so that they disengage from the gear 7, 8 and so that clutch dogs 9 on the gear 5 engage dogs 10 on the member 3. Gear 5 is moved by a fork 16 operated by an arm 20, and the gear 4 is constrained to move axially with the gear 5 by blocks 23, 24 secured to the latter and having projections engaging an annular groove 22 in a part 21 of the gear 4. As shown, the member 1 is the vertical spindle of a drilling machine, the member 3 being driven at various speeds from a motor through stepped belt pulleys.
